Mechanical Field Service Engineer (Heavy Industry)

Location: Essex / Kent / Greater London

Salary: £37,000 - £47,000 (DOE)

OTE: Up to £60,000+ (uncapped overtime)

A well-established engineering consultancy working across power generation and petrochemical sites is looking to recruit three Mechanically Biased Field Service EngineersThe business supports major industrial clients by filling critical skill gaps, responding to breakdowns, delivering project work and installations, and refurbishing or manufacturing specialist components. With a strong order book and several large projects planned over the next 3-5 years, this is an excellent time to join. As a Mechanical Field Service Engineer, you'll work across a range of heavy industrial environments, carrying out maintenance, fault-finding, and project support. The role is hands-on, varied, and suited to engineers who enjoy autonomy and problem-solving in the field.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Mechanical maintenance and breakdown support on heavy industrial equipment
  • Must be commutable to Essex for callout (within 1 hour)
  • Working on pumps (centrifugal), conveyors, bearings, drives, gearboxes, pipework and basic hydraulics
  • Fault diagnosis and repair without direct supervision
  • Confident use of measuring equipment for alignment and tolerances
  • Producing clear reports including findings, condition assessments, actions taken and recommendations
  • Supporting and, where required, leading planned outages and project work

Working Pattern & Travel

  • Standard hours: 40 hours per week (7am-4pm)
  • Overtime: Widely available (typically ~500 hours per year, busiest March-August)
  • Call-out: 1 in 6 weeks
    • Minimum 4 hours paid per call-out
    • 1.5x pay before midnight, 2x pay after midnight
    • Late finishes allow for next-day flexibility and mandatory rest time
  • Travel: Mostly local; occasional stay-aways (approx. 1 in 5)
    • Hotel fully booked by the company
    • £50 per day work-away allowance (£30 accommodation supplement + £20 food)
    • Travel over 2 hours typically results in a stay-away with a 12-hour shift

What We're Looking For

  • Strong mechanical background in heavy industry or manufacturing
  • Experience with pumps, conveyors, gearboxes, bearings and rotating equipment
  • Ability to work independently and make sound engineering decisions
  • Engineering qualifications (NVQ, apprenticeship or equivalent)
  • Clean or near-clean UK driving licence
  • Physically fit and able to pass site security checks
  • Open to travel and occasional overnight stays
