Normally when job seekers hear the words “recruitment agency” all they want to do is run a mile. We understand that looking for a new job can be a scary task, but we are not that bad. You just need to make sure you find the right one.
Here are some top tips for working with recruitment agencies;
There are different types of agencies so make sure you chose the right one
There is not a one size fits all when it comes to recruitment agencies as many will specialise in a particular sector or may be more geared towards permanent or temporary work. Be open and clear with your consultant from the start about what it is you are looking for. Don’t worry they will not string you along or “ghost” you will potential roles as we genuinely want to help people.
Tailor your CV
It is easy to fall into the trap of having one generic CV and much easier when applying for multiple roles however this could be doing you an injustice. Make sure you tailor your CV for the role and highlight your relevant skills as this will make sure that you are not overlooked in the 1000’s of CV’s that your recruiter is sifting through.
Only apply for suitable roles
Blanket applying for absolutely everything that a recruitment agency lists can make you look unfocused and they may question what it is you are looking for. A recruitment agency wants to find work that you’ll be suitable for, they can’t do this if you don’t narrow your interests and expertise areas. However, it is a good idea to apply for new roles as and when they arise that you are suited to, so the recruitment agency know that you are still looking.
Be punctual and organised
Everyone is busy but make sure you remember to turn up for your interview and get back to the recruiter with feedback after. If you fail to turn up for an interview can you blame your consultant for having second thoughts about putting you forward to further interviews and potentially ruining client relationships.
